TGN: Simon Peter

Prayer: Revive me by Your Word Heavenly Father. Preserve my life according to Your Word. LORD, I submit all of my plans to You (tell Him Your plans, speak them aloud); and I wait expectantly for Your answer. Help me understand the meaning of Your commandments. Strengthen and encourage me by Your Word. Keep me from deceitful ways, especially from lying to myself. I desire the privilege of knowing Your instruction. I have chosen the way of truth; to be faithful. I have determined to live by Your regulations. I cling to Your laws. LORD, I know You will not let me be put to shame! So, today and every day, I will pursue Your commands, for You have set my heart free and expand my understanding. In Jesus' name. Amen (Psalm 119:22-32).

THE TWELVE DISCIPLES/APOSTLES*part 2*

Mark 3 v. 13-19 (NIV)
Emphasis v.16

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve— designating them apostles— that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter)...

------

Jesus' faithful disciples were ordinary men who became extraordinary because of Jesus Christ. Despite their confusion and lack of understanding during His lifetime, they became powerful witnesses to His resurrection. Their lives were transformed by God's power.

The Life Application Study Bible provides a chart that goes in to each disciple/apostle specifically, so that we may learn more about who they were and what we can learn from their lives. Starting with...

SIMON PETER

*Son of John (not the baptist-another John)

*Occupation: Fisherman

*Outstanding Characteristics: Impulsive; later-BOLD in preaching about Jesus.

*Major Events in Peter's Life:
1) One of the three in core group of disciples.
2) Recognized Jesus as the Messiah.
3) Denied Christ as predicted by Jesus; and repented.
4) Preached Pentecost sermon.
5) A leader of the Jerusalem church.
6) Baptized Gentiles.
7) Wrote 1 and 2 Peter.

*What Jesus said about Peter:
-Jesus named Simon- Peter, meaning "rock."
-Jesus also rebuke Peter as "satan" when Peter urged Jesus to reject the cross.
-Jesus told Peter that he would fish for people.
-Jesus told Peter that he received revelation from God.
-Jesus told Peter how he would die.

* A Key Lesson from Peter's life: Christians falter at times, but when they return to Jesus, He forgives them and strengthens their faith.

DO YOU NEED TO RETURN TO JESUS?

- Pray over the "Peter" qualities in you or someone in your life. Ask God to make an impact in this world through those qualities that can be perceived and sometimes used negatively.

The story of Jesus' disciples does not end with the 4 Gospels, it continues in the books of Act and many of the letters.
